Introduction
Binary Pirates – the first Capture the Flag network security contest in India offers all you budding hackers the perfect arena to battle it out and emerge as “THE ELITE HACKER”. This contest will test both the defensive and offensive network security skills of the participants. Anyone with basic knowledge of computer networks can participate as you will be provided with all the resources that are required to compete in the event. So sharpen your brain and get set for the binary wars.
Description
Each participating team will be given virtual machines, one preinstalled with Linux (Backtrack) and another with Windows XP. The systems are riddled with security vulnerabilities, and may possibly include vulnerable services, such as telnet and FTP. These services will be preinstalled on the virtual machine provided. The goal of each team is to maintain the set of services available and uncompromised throughout the contest while attempting to compromise other teams' services. Since all the teams receive an identical copy of the virtual machines, the task of each team is to find vulnerabilities in their copy of the hosts and possibly fix the vulnerabilities without disrupting the services. At the same time, the teams have to leverage their knowledge about the vulnerabilities they found to compromise the servers run by other teams.
As such, participants must know how to attack and get the Flags on opponents’ servers in order to score points, and at the same time, know how to defend their own box from being compromised and losing points. Some patches and hints will be available hidden in the machine provided to you.
Scoring System
During the contest a scoring system keeps track of which services are available, and which services have been compromised on each team’s machines. Teams are scored on both their success in defending their assigned machine and on their success in attacking machines assigned to other teams. The score server will attempt to establish connections to the services and ensure they are running and at the same time check for the presence of the Flags. Defensive points will be given if the service is up and bonus points if the flag is uncompromised. A team can get offensive points for submitting the flag of another team. More details about the scoring system will be uploaded soon.
Rules
- Maximum of 4 members are allowed in a team.
- Only students from educational institutions are allowed to participate.
- It is forbidden to launch denial-of-service (DOS) attacks.
- Traffic generation will be penalized, regardless of the fact that the traffic is part of a DOS attack or not.
- It is possible to patch the services, provided that the patch does not break the scoring system. If the modification to the service makes the service not accessible, points will be lost.
- Any attack against the scoring system will not be tolerated and will lead to immediate disqualification.
- The verdict of the organizers will be final on all matters.
