Event - Reacto-Drive

Prizes worth Rs 15000 up for grabs for this event. Make the most of this opportunity and register now!

With a considerable shortage of oil, ways of developing alternate means of energy are fast catching up in today's world.

Problem Statement
Make a model car that can cover maximum distance on a straight track powered solely by means of a chemical reaction.

Rules
The competition aims at measuring only the maximum distance covered by the ChemCar. There is no race or time factor involved. The cars will not be competing with each other but would be running individually.

In case of a tie the two teams will race head to head on a straight track of pre-determined distance.

  • They also have the option of positioning the chemcar anywhere before the line but the distance covered would be measured only from the starting line. The participants may place their machines at the start line.
  • All teams will be given two attempts. The attempt in which maximum distance is covered will be considered.
  • Teams are allowed to mix any chemicals required for propulsion at the start line only and will not be allowed to touch the chemcar, once it starts moving.
  • Use of hazardous or toxic chemicals is strictly prohibited. Before the event, the machines will be checked for safety and machine found to be unsafe by the event managers will be disqualified.
  • The chemcar is allowed to leave any loose parts on any part of the arena. Any machine disintegrating completely during the race will be disqualified.
  • All wheels of the chemcar should remain in contact with the ground throughout the distance traversed.
  • Teams are allowed to use readymade toy cars, however, the car used should not be powered by any other means such as batteries, springs, IC engines and so on.
  • The use of readymade rockets or firecrackers is prohibited.

Track Specifications
The track used for the event will be a smooth surface viz. a cemented road or a granite surface. The width and length will be put up soon.

Abstract Submission
It is essential for teams to submit an abstract about their model before the competition. It is not necessary that that model of the car be ready at the time of abstract submission.
The written abstract should be prepared on the following lines:

  • The reaction setup and the basic layout of the car should be explained in detail; along with proper diagrams (pictures of the incomplete/complete model may be included).
  • All the chemicals, a team intends to use in the event should be clearly stated. The teams should also mention which chemicals they would like us to arrange for them.
  • Description of any unusual / advantageous mechanism used should be given.
  • The specifications of all the components used must also be submitted.
  • Each team is allowed to make one submission only. In case of multiple submissions, the first submission will only be used for judging purposes.

In case, it is not possible or feasible to arrange for the chemicals, the team will be notified accordingly. Teams having any prohibited components in their machine will also be notified so as to make the necessary modifications in the design.
The last date for abstract submission is 5th January 2008.

General Rules

  • The team should not consist of more than 4 members.
  • The teams may obtain a time slot for practice before the event. Slots will be given on a first come first serve basis.
  • Any team that is not ready at the time assigned will be disqualified from the competition automatically.
  • There will also be an evaluation of the machines for other prizes such as most innovative design, best fabrication and so on.
  • The teams must not damage the opponent's machine in any way. Judges reserve the right to disqualify any team indulged in misbehavior.

Dimensions and Fabrication

  • The machine should fit in a box of dimensions 40cm X 40cm X 50cm at every given point of the race. Any external device used to control the machine is not included in the size constraint.
  • The machine is allowed to be made from Lego parts, or any ready-made assembly kits however the propulsion mechanism must be made by the teams themselves.

Eligibility

All students with a valid identity card of their respective educational institutes are eligible to participate in the event.

Special Note

  • The decision of the judges shall be treated as final and binding on all.
  • The organizers reserve the rights to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit. Change in rules, if any will be highlighted on the website and notified to the registered participants.
