Newton's Junkyard

So you think you know all the Conversion Forms of Energy? You think you have the Passion to Make Things just out of junk or trash? Well then, Newton's Junkyard is the place for you! Turn your imagination into a maze of energy jumps to make a contraption.

Prizes worth INR 12,000 to be won!

Details

Round 1:

Submit abstract format and step list online with the pictures of your contraption (Look under Resources tab).

Round 2:

Problem Statement-

Aim: To throw a ring around a bottle from a vertical height of at least 50 cm.

  • Bottle: A standard 1 litre Bisleri/ Aquafina mineral water or some other bottle matching the following dimension criterion:
  • Height: 20 to 30 cm.
  • Diameter: Base diameter ranging from 6 to 7.5 cm
  • Ring: Standard circular ring with a maximum diameter of 10 cm.

Bonus Step: The ring must not be directly above the bottle. A minimum horizontal distance of the centre of the ring from the centre of the bottle must be at least 40 cm while maintaining the aforementioned minimum vertical height. (100 points)

Rules

All participants are requested to bring 2 properly printed copies of the write-ups of their contraption, clearly mentioning the number of steps, and the number and type of energy conversions during the contraption event.

  • The problem statement has to be the last step of the contraption.
  • The number of steps before reaching the problem statement have to be as many as possible (just unleash your creative mind). However, there is a lower limit for the number of steps! The minimum steps should be atleast 5.
  • Thinking about interventions? You can have them, proportionate to the number of steps you have. For example, if you have less than 10 steps in total, you can’t have any interventions. For extra steps from there onwards, you get the option of taking more interventions. Refer to the table below.

Intermediate Sub-task

  • Recursive Module: In ‘Recurring Module’ your aim is to make a set of steps which will repeat a minimum of 2 times before proceeding to the next module. This module should contain a minimum of 5 steps. (150 points)
  • Parallel Module: Initiating two or more contraptions from a single step and merging them at some point of time before the final objective is completed is a parallel contraption. Minimum number of steps in a parallel contraption should be 7. (100 points)
  • Dominoes Module: You have to make a domino pattern with minimum 25 dominoes. (75 points)

Total Number of Steps  Maximum Number of Interventions Allowed
05-10 0
11-20    1
21-30 2
31-45 3
 45+ 5
  • So try to have as many steps as possible, but make sure they are practical.
  • For each intervention by you, 15 marks will be deducted.

Steps are useful only if they include energy conversions. Steps with energy conversions have more points than those without energy conversions. Every step, irrespective of energy conversions gets you 1 point. An energy conversion involved in that step gives you bonus points as mentioned below.

Type of Energy Points Awarded
Chemical 40
Sound    50
Electromagnetic 30
Electrical 20
Mechanical 10
Light 50

  • For a repeated energy conversion teams will be awarded half of the original conversion points.
  • Same energy conversion but in a different form will also be awarded points.
  • All teams completing the task will be given 50 points.
  • Failing to start the contraption when asked to by the coordinators could lead to disqualification of the team for that trial. So be ready with all the settings by the time of starting the competition. The teams will be tested in a random order.
  • Participants are allowed to skip maximum of two steps only after intervention in any trial.
  • The contraption must be safe to the satisfaction of the judges and coordinators. Do not use firecrackers, flammable chemicals, or any other substances which seem harmful.
  • A space of 8×6 ft will be provided for the contraption. Convenient space will be provided around this area for people to move around.
  • No object should leave the space of 8×6 ft during the contraption. For example, if you use a liquid like water, it may not flow out of the given space.
  • Participants are allowed to skip one step after an intervention in any trial (points deductable for that step).
  • You will be given two trials. After the failure of 1st trial you will be given 15 min of setup time.

Eligibility:

  • All students with a valid photo identity card of their respective educational institutes are eligible to participate in Contraptions at Quark 2012.
