Heat Wave

Prizes Worth INR 20,000

In this modern age, it is energy that drives the entire world around. Unfortunately, the resources to feed this power-hungry earth are either rapidly dwindling or are heavily polluting. How then to meet the aspirations of millions of people without destroying our environment forever?

So in Quark 2012, let us all contrive to develop an alternate source of energy and explore revolutionary technology which will change the way the world produces its power.

HEAT WAVE is a heat transfer event which will be held in two rounds. Each team is required to think of an eco-friendly exothermic reaction which generates sufficient heat to be transferred to another container containing a salt solution.

Round 1

In this round the participants will have to give a presentation demonstrating the mechanism, and  justifying the choice of reactants.

Round 2

This round consists of transferring heat to a salt solution from the heat generated by the chemical reaction of the participants' choice.

Teams will be judged upon two main factors, viz.:

  •    degree of environment-friendliness
  •    temperature difference of the salt solution before and after the heat transfer

Rules

Prizes Worth INR 20,000

SPECIFICATIONS

1.      The participants will have to make a setup containing 2 chambers (containers). In the first chamber reaction will take place and the other will contain salt solution.

2.      The participants will also have to keep a 1.5inch gap between the 2 chambers and fit a metal plate in the gap so as to transfer heat to the other vessel.

3.      The dimension of the metal plate depends on the design of the chambers. But the width should be equal to 1.5inch.

4.      The whole setup should fit inside 1ft x 1ft base area.

5.      Each team would be given equal amount of salt solution of about 500ml.

EVENT RULES

1.      Each team will have to take part in both the rounds. There will be no qualification round.

2.      In round 2, each team will be given 10 minutes, after which the temperature reading will be noted.

3.      The metal plate should be at room temperature. Any heated plate found would lead to disqualification.

4.      The participants are allowed to use insulating materials to prevent heat loss.

5.      Participants can make use of thermal paste to reduce heat losses from the sides of the metal plate.

GENERAL RULES

1.      Any team that is not ready at the specified time shall be disqualified automatically.

2.      The teams must adhere to the spirit of healthy competition. Judges reserve the right to disqualify any team indulged in misbehaviour.

3.      Judges decision shall be final and binding on all.

4.      The organizers reserve the right to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit. Change in rules if any will be highlighted in the website and will be notified to the registered participants.

CERTIFICATION POLICY

  • The top 2 teams will be awarded Certificate of Excellence.
  • The rest of the teams will be awarded a Certificate of Participation.

Team Specifications:

Minimum : 1 members
Maximum : 3 members

Judging Criteria

Prizes Worth INR 20,000

Round 1:

This round will be judged on the following factors:

1.      Equipment and Design

2.      Means of heat synthesis

3.      Degree of environment-friendliness

Round 2:

This round will primarily be judged upon the temperature rise of the salt solution.

Each team will take part in both the rounds (abstract & presentation and heat transfer) and marks of each round will be calculated and summed up to a total of 100. The evaluation of each team will be done one by one and not simultaneously (for both the rounds).

The marking scheme will be as follows:-

  • Round 1– 40 marks
  • Round 2– 60 marks
